Closet Doors is my senior BFA thesis and a series of three hand-painted doors. Each painting explores a different “closet” I had to step out of. The first door, She, As In Drag Queen, tells the story of my rejection of the patriarchal ideal of femininity and the forging of my gender identity under the historical context of the femme lesbianism. The second door, The Holy Queer Covenant, reimagines queer community, using the context of The Blood Sisters of the AIDS crisis, as a type of sacred promise— a bond that connects queer people together. The final door, Hunting the Wolf, Eating The Fruit, examines the newfound freedom and personal healing that results from totally decentering men and embracing lesbian love.
